+ Can I compost my household food scraps?
If you live in a single-family home or an apartment block it should not pose much of a challenge for composting residential food scraps. All you need a small patch of ground and how to separate the food types the internet is filled with various ways to start off or learn more about worm composting or black soldier fly composting which can be done indoors or outdoors. If that method seems like too much trouble check in at your local gardening supplier most of them stock boxes or containers with very easy to operate instructions ready to start when you get home
+ What are the different categories of waste?
Industrial waste - waste generated on industrial premises through manufacturing or fabricating processes.
What are the special provisions regarding hazardous waste?
The Director is empowered to arrange for the clearing and cleaning of debris and pollution effects, transporting and disposing of the waste at a licensed waste disposal facility accredited for the specific type of waste generated.
The Director may also arrange for the rehabilitation and repair of any infrastructure, buildings, equipment or natural environment.
All the costs of management, rehabilitation and repair are for the account of the person responsible for the emergency.
If the emergency is an act of God the City will deal with the emergency as the circumstances and funding best allow.
If the waste is not in a container provided by the City, the storage containers used for the storage or transportation of waste must be intact and not corroded or in any way unfit for use.
Ensure that the waste cannot be blown away.
Prevent all nuisances such as odour, visual impacts and breeding of vectors.
Pollution and harm to health must be prevented.
Any waste items or substances must be safe for handling, collection or disposal. Not harmful, even if accessed by unauthorised persons or members of the public.
Hazardous waste must be sealed in an impervious container and suitable measures put in place to prevent tampering.
Suitable measures must be in place to prevent accidental spillage or leakage.
The penalties for non-compliance include fines or imprisonment, as the court sees fit. The court may also order the removal of the waste and the payment of the expenses incurred and any other costs or damages.
+ My black bin has been stolen. What do i do?
This may come as a surprise to some but in our beautiful country bins get stolen more often than you would think. What happens to the bin and what to do next has a lot of grey areas.
City of Cape Town Solid Waste Department has its own law enforcement team of approximately 20 persons. In addition, any waste related Integrated Waste Management By-law is enforced by the City Police.
My bin has been stolen. How do I get it replaced?
To apply for a replacement bin, the resident needs to report the theft of the bin to SAPS. They will receive an SAPS case number or a copy of the affidavit. The resident must then contact the City’s Call Centre on 0860 103 089 or e-mail Wastewise.User@capetown.gov.za and provide the following information:
The Call Centre will create a system notification and provide the resident with the reference number and the bin should be delivered within five working days.
Refuse containers should be kept on the resident’s property until the scheduled refuse collection day. On the day of refuse collection, the refuse bin should be placed out on the pavement by 06:00.
